Free. Year-round. High-level. These three terms best describe the NYTimes Writing Contests for Teens aged 13 through 18 all around the world. Around every month or so, a new writing contest is available on the NYT Website. Students are asked to write a short piece (word limit: around 500 characters). The writing contests are extremely popular and each competition receives thousands of entries from hopeful candidates looking for the elusive prize for winners: being published by the New York Times. Successful competitors are even allowed to return annually! An example of arguably the most popular NYTimes writing contest is the summer reading contest where students are asked to write an opinion about a piece of media they recently read  in 1500 characters or less. While many enter hoping to win, students have often felt that simply participating was a meaningful experience. To get involved in this unique writing contest, go to the contest website and find the current opportunity! Submissions can be made directly on the website.
