Highlight: In the words of Leyla Beban, “My territory as a writer is exploring the unknown”. Leyla was an avid writer and ardent reader. Her passion for adventure and exploring her imagination both in poetry and in nature was immense. Sadly, one day in 2012 she was involved in a tragic truck accident that took her life. In order to continue her legacy of love for reading and poetry her family started up Bluefire (a literary journal dedicated to encouraging the voices of young writers) and this scholarship, $1000 for 1000 words, in her honour. This essay competition, $1000 for 1000 words is a very straightforward scholarship. As the title suggests, all you have to do is write a 1000 word essay; it can be on any topic, but the essay has to be precisely 1000 words, no more OR LESS. For example, if your essay has 997 words, it would require exactly 3 more words to be eligible. Students in grades 6-12 from anywhere in the world can enter one of the 2 divisions: 6-8 or 9-12. With an application deadline of February 1st, it’s the perfect time to gather your New Year’s thoughts or review and select something you’ve written over the past year to develop and submit. It’s not about being the next William Shakespeare or J.K Rowling, it’s your writing journey! Only you see, think, and can express yourself like you..submit your 1000 words and become one of the supported and celebrated youth voices of Bluefire today!
