We may change or add to this privacy notice, so we encourage you to come back and read it periodically. Building U is the data controller that resides in Toronto, Ontario and St. John’s, Newfoundland – Canada. By using our websites, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this notice.

WHAT IS PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Personal information is information that identifies you or could be combined with other information to identify you. At Building-U, personal information means: your personal e-mail address, your first and last name and may include your grade, gender, and location. Personal information may also be information containing details as to whether you have opened our promotional e-mails or how you have used our website if we can associate that personal information with you.

COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

Information You Provide We collect personal information when you submit your name, email address, when you register as a student
on our Building-U websites. We have a “preferences” feature that will further identify your choices that align to the grade you are in. We do not, however, explicitly collect your age.

Information Collected Automatically

Like many websites, we and our service providers use cookies, web beacons and other technologies to receive and store certain types of information when you interact with us through your computer or mobile device. We use these technologies to help us recognize you, customize your experience and develop relevant marketing messages. Here are some of the types of information we collect:
● Log & Device data. When you visit our site, we may automatically record information (“log data”), including information that your browser sends whenever you visit our site. This log data may include your web address you came from or are going to, and your browser type.
● Cookie data. We may use “cookies” (a small text file sent by your computer each time you visit our site) or similar technologies to record log data. When we use cookies, we may use “session” cookies (that last until you close your browser) or “persistent” cookies (that last until you or your browser delete them). To help us make emails more useful and interesting, we often receive confirmation when you open emails from us if your computer supports such capabilities. You can opt out of receiving recurrent emails from us.

COLLECTION OF CHILDREN’S PERSONAL INFORMATION

At building-U we aim to support students in high school and beyond. This can include children in a typical age
range of 13 to 17 years old.

If you are from a country where parental consent or authorization is required to use our products and services,
please discuss and gain permission from a parent or guardian before using our services. We will not knowingly
ask children of or under that age to provide more personal information than is required to provide for the
product or service.

Once parental consent or authorization is granted, the student’s account and their activity remain private to
themselves. The student can access communication services offered by Building-U, for example the chat
feature in the $4YT game, and can freely communicate and share private information with other users of all
ages, where they can decide whether to remain anonymous or not.

Parents or guardians can change or revoke the consent choices previously made, and review, edit, or request
the deletion of the personal information of the children for whom they provided consent or authorization. The
parent or guardian can manage a child’s information and settings through their online account.

HOW WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We may use information that we collect about you to:
● to respond to your requests for further information about our services;
● to meet legal and regulatory requirements;
● to inform you of our programs, products or services that may be of interest to you (for example resources, internships, or events (like $4YT); and
● to provide you with our newsletter service. If you no longer wish to receive our newsletter you can ask us not to send any further material by unsubscribing.

GROUNDS FOR USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA

This section explains how we may use the information we collect about you. We will only use your information
for certain specified reasons and only where we have a lawful basis to do so. The lawful bases we rely on
depend on the type of relationship we have with you and how we interact with you.

The information that we collect and store relating to you is primarily used to enable us to create a more
friendly experience, expose you to relevant resources you may find interesting, and update you about our
annual event ($4YT). We rely on the following lawful grounds to collect and process any personal information
you may have provided:

Legitimate Business Interests: a) to provide you with information requested from us relating to our resources and/or events; b) to notify you about any changes to our Website, such as improvements or service/product changes, that may affect our service. If you are an existing subscriber to our website, we may contact you with information about products and services similar to those that you have used from us before.
User Consent: To collect, use or disclose your personal information, except in specific circumstances where collection, use or disclosure without consent is authorized or required by law. We may assume your consent in cases where you volunteer information for an obvious purpose.

We may ask for your express consent for some purposes and may not be able to provide certain services if you are unwilling to provide consent to the collection, use or disclosure of certain personal information. Where express consent is needed, we will normally ask you to provide your consent in writing, by checking a box on a form, or electronically (by clicking a button or responding to a registeredemail).

You can withdraw consent from us to use or disclose your personal information for a particular purpose at any time by contacting us at connect@building-U.com Should you withdraw your consent for us to collect, use or disclose your personal information, it may affect our ability to serve you and to maintain our relationship with you.

OUR WEBSITE

Our websites may contain links to other websites that we do not operate, which are not governed by this notice. If you click on a third party link, you will be taken directly to that site which is governed by its own privacy notice. We strongly encourage you to read that privacy notice. We do not control that site and assume no responsibility for the content, policies or its practices.

Also, we may monitor through our website traffic patterns, site usage and related site information to optimize our web service. We may provide aggregated information to third parties, but these statistics do not include any identifiable personal information.

SECURING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We take administrative, technical and physical measures to safeguard your personal information against unauthorized access, unauthorized disclosure, theft and misuse. This includes limiting access of employees (staff) and volunteers to, and the use of, your personal information through the use of role based access control.

We take physical precautions to ensure that the computer servers on which your personal information is stored and archived are secure and that access to such servers is protected. We educate our employees (staff) and volunteers on their obligations to protect your personal information and we require our affiliates and third-party providers to take comparable steps to ensure the protection of any of your personal information that is shared with them.

Although we take precautions against possible data breaches of our systems, no company can fully eliminate the risks of unauthorized access to your personal information. We cannot guarantee that unauthorized access, hacking, data loss or breaches of our systems will never occur.

ACCESSING AND UPDATING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We understand that your personal information is yours and we respect that. We make every reasonable effort to ensure that your personal information is accurate and complete. We rely on you to notify us if there is a change to your personal information that may affect your relationship with us. If you are aware of an error in our information about you, please let us know and we will correct it on request wherever possible. In some cases, we may ask for a written request for correction. If you wish to have access or update your personal information, please contact us privacy@building-u.com. However, please be reminded that you have full access rights to your own account and you can correct your information at any time.

DISCLOSURE AND RETENTION OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We may share your personal information with our service providers that help us with our business operations and partners that we collaborate with to provide you with products and services. For example, your account information and any information you send us via the Contact Us feature is transmitted and stored by our service providers in the US. Please note that when your personal information is used or stored outside of Canada, it will also be subject to the laws of the country in which it is used or stored.

Through your searches you may find resources that are of interest to you. At no time we will divulge or share this information with any third party and this information is accessible only to you.

We require our service providers and partners to keep your personal information secure and not use or disclose personal information for any purpose other than providing the services on our behalf unless we or they have obtained your consent.

We retain personal information only as long as it is reasonable, from when a student first subscribes until the end of their first post secondary year, and students may delete their account at any time.

YOUR RIGHTS

In addition to the rights described below, you can also access, amend or delete some information through your
online account with building-U.

● Right of Access and Portability: You have the right to request that we inform you of the personal information we have collected, used and shared about you, and to obtain a copy of it.

● Right of Erasure: You have the right to request that we delete the personal information we have collected or retained about you. You can close your Building-U account by emailing us at privacy@building-u.com

● Right of rectification: You have the right to rectify your information, restrict processing, and object to the use of your personal information in some circumstances as defined by law.

● Right to Object: You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances. For example,you have the right to object to the use of your personal information for direct marketing purposes.

● Right to Restrict: You have the right to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.

In some cases, your choices to provide, change or delete information may affect our ability to deliver our services, or your user experience. We may decline to process requests which are not otherwise required by applicable law. You have the right not to be unlawfully discriminated against because you have exercised these rights.

CHANGES TO THE NOTICE

Our privacy notice may be updated or amended from time to time to reflect our current practices or to comply with legal requirements. We will keep you updated on our new privacy practices by revising our privacy notice and posting it to our website. Be sure to check it for updates.
